Week 8
This weekly update is going to be quite short. We had class Monday and the only point of interest was our US Literature test. In the States, my English exams have always been multiple choice with questions pertaining to your interpretation of a text, or it’s been an essay on a theme from the book. This test was similar, yet very different. We were given an excerpt and we had to identify the year it was written, who it was written by, the genre (our professors definition of a genre was either short story, poem, novel, or drama- a definition of “genre” I’ve never heard), and the name of the text. And to top it off spelling had to be perfect otherwise your answer was wrong, which I don’t think is fair to ask of students whose first language isn’t English because we didn’t know that this would be an expectation ahead of time. Then, we were asked to write a short response explaining how symbolism was used alongside foreshadowing to develop the excerpt, but we had very specific rules that were quite limiting in what were able to write. Having so many rules to follow and worrying whether or not I spelled the author’s name correctly led me to overthink my response. Until now, all of my writing assignments have been comparatively open ended. Had I known the format of the test- if I’d had a better idea of what to expect- I would have worried less about whether I was meeting his expectations. I think I did ok- but I’m fairly certain I spelled the author’s name wrong..
